Help Musicians UK have announced the winners of their Peter Whittingham Jazz Award, which for 25 years has nurtured creative jazz talent. The awards were decided at an auditions in front of a panel of jazz stars including Issie Barratt, Julian Joseph, Claire Martin OBE and Dave O’Higgins.

The two main winners, the Patchwork Jazz Orchestra (pictured) and Square One – the first joint winners of the award since 2000 – will each receive £5,000. The Patchwork Jazz Orchestra features many Academy alumni as composer/performers, including Misha Mullov-Abbado (bass), Tom Green (trombone) and Scott Chapman (drums).

In addition to the main awards, Help Musicians UK Development Awards worth £2,500 each were offered to Come Back Stronger (led by drummer JJ Wheeler), and to fellow Royal Academy of Music graduates Big Bad Wolf.
