The Royal Academy of Music is delighted to announce that UK music education specialist Lesley-Ann Thomson will be the new Director of Junior Academy.

Lesley-Ann, who is currently Head of Junior Music Courses at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, has worked extensively in music education across Britain as both a community musician and a peripatetic teacher, and has experience of working with students and adults with special educational needs and disabilities.

In 2014, while working at Enterprise Music Scotland as Education and Projects Officer, she managed the hugely successful Music Education Matters conference, before moving into full-time management as Head of the Instrumental Music Service at West Dunbartonshire Council.

Lesley-Ann took up the role of Deputy Chief Executive and Head of Education at Kent Music in 2015, where she was integral in the restructuring of the company and in the implementation of salaried teachers.

A graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, she has lived and worked in Glasgow as a freelance double bassist, performing with orchestras including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra of Scottish Opera.

Lesley-Ann will succeed Howard Ionascu, whose talent and dedication have been central to the success of Junior Academy for the last five years. He will take up the role of Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College in January 2019.

On her appointment, Lesley-Ann said: ‘I am delighted to be joining the Royal Academy of Music in the role of Director of Junior Academy during this exciting time of development. I am greatly looking forward to joining the Junior Academy team and working alongside them, the teachers and the parents to ensure that every student receives the best experience possible to help them reach their full potential.’

Principal of the Academy, Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, said: ‘We are thrilled that Lesley-Ann is joining us to lead an increasingly crucial area of the Academy’s mission. She comes with a breadth of vision and experience which, alongside a very able team, will continue to enable Junior Academy to offer the very best for its young musicians.’
