17-year-old Alexandra Ridout has been awarded the BBC Young Musician Jazz Award. The trumpeter was awarded first prize after playing a set with Academy alumni Gwilym Simcock and James Maddren along with Yuri Goloubev.

Three of the other four finalists also have Academy connections: Tom Ridout, saxophone and recorder (age 21, fourth-year undergraduate); Tom Smith, saxophone (age 20, second-year undergraduate); and Noah Stoneman, piano (age 15, Junior Jazz student). ‘An evening in any of these bands’ company would have been worth an entrance fee’, wrote Jazzwise magazine.

Alexander Bone, the winner of the first BBC Young Musician Jazz Award in 2014 and himself now a student at the Academy, also performed in the 2016 final.
