Claude-Michel Schönberg awarded Honorary Membership of the Royal Academy of Music

We are pleased to welcome Claude-Michel Schönberg as an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music. Schönberg was awarded the honour at the Academy Musical Theatre Company’s opening of the new Susie Sainsbury Theatre yesterday, in a celebration of his music and his contribution to the world of musical theatre.

The Academy Musical Theatre Company and Orchestra performed in This is the Hour, a showcase of the composer’s songs from Miss SaigonLes MisérablesMartin GuerreThe Pirate Queen and Wuthering Heights, and included a guest appearance from ‘Little Britain’ star, Matt Lucas - who appeared in the 25th anniversary concert of Les Misérables and reprised his role in the West End. Original director of Les Misérables, John Caird gave a citation.

The concert was directed by James Powell, with musical staging by Chrissie Cartwright and was conducted by Head of Musical Theatre, Dan Bowling.

Schönberg is currently a Visiting Professor of Musical Theatre at the Academy and has played an integral role in the development of our current musical theatre company this past year. Head of Musical Theatre, Dan Bowling, says: ‘He is an incredibly passionate and inspiring mentor and each one of our students has benefitted beyond measure from the personal contact he has so generously given from the very first day of joining.’
