The Academy is pleased to welcome two internationally acclaimed musicians to its extensive roster of visiting professors: baritone Christian Gerhaher and violinist Chloë Hanslip.

A student of the Opera School of the Academy of Music in Munich, Gerhaher perfected his vocal training – whilst completing his medical studies - in masterclasses given by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Inge Borkh. Gerhaher is an honorary professor at the Academy of Music in Munich and gives select masterclasses, including here, at the Royal Academy of Music, earlier in 2019. He and his regular piano accompanist Gerold Huber have devoted 30 years to teaching, recording and performing lieder worldwide.

Hanslip has performed with some of the world’s greatest orchestras and made her BBC Proms debut at 14 and her US concerto debut at 15. Her extensive discography includes her debut recording Chloë (for which she won an Echo Klassik Award), the complete Beethoven Violin Sonatas with regular duo partner Danny Driver on Rubicon Classics, concertos by Bruch (which won a Classic BRIT) and concertos by Vieuxtemps, Schoeck and Glazunov.

The Academy’s Principal, Jonathan Freeman-Attwood CBE, said: ‘I am thrilled that two such wonderful teachers and artists are joining the Academy as visiting professors. Both Christian and Chloë are notably generous and committed communicators at every level of their work and our students will benefit immeasurably. We much look forward to welcoming them both.’

The Academy’s Head of Strings, Jo Cole, said: ‘I am delighted, excited and proud that Chloë Hanslip has accepted our invitation to join Tasmin Little, Daniel Hope and James Ehnes as Visiting Professor of Violin at the Academy. Chloe is a beacon of insightful creative artistry, a passionately eloquent communicator - in person and as a musician - and a joyfully inspiring role model for all our students.’
