Celebrated Danish composer, Visiting Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music and professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Music Bent Sørensen, has won the prestigious University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition.

Sørensen won the award for his 2015 piece L’isola della Città (The Island in the City); a triple concerto for violin, cello and piano which premiered in Copenhagen in January 2016.

On receiving the award he commented: 'I am proud – I allow myself to be that, and I am incredibly grateful for the recognition that is inherent in receiving such a grand award as this. With the recognition comes a responsibility – in the best possible way – and even more: it becomes a wonderful inspiration for my work as a composer in the future.'

Winners of the Grawemeyer Awards include those in the fields of music composition, psychology, education and religion. The 2018 winners will receive $100,000 and present lectures about their work in April 2018. Sørensen joins Grawemeyer Award winning composers Hans Abrahamsen, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Peter Lieberson and Senior Professor of Composition at the Academy, Simon Bainbridge.
