Edward Hyde and Florence Cain have completed a Junior Academy clean sweep in BBC Radio 2’s Young Chorister of the Year.

The grand final of this year's competition – now in its 30th year – was held at Manchester Cathedral and broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on 26th October. The eight finalists had already performed in two rigorous preliminary rounds, contested by young singers from all around the country. The panel of expert judges featured composer Bob Chilcott, vocal coach Carrie Grant and Christopher Stokes, director of music at Manchester Cathedral.

The two Young Choristers of the Year 2016 can expect a range of performance opportunities, and appearances on BBC television and radio programmes.

Florence is a first-study singer at Junior Academy; treble Edward is a first-study trombonist.

Junior Academy students have enjoyed considerable success in BBC music competitions in 2016: cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason was the widely acclaimed winner of BBC Young Musician, and jazz trumpeter Alexandra Ridout was awarded the BBC Young Musician Jazz Award in March – four of the five finalists study at the Academy.
