The Principal’s Welcome

Welcome to Autumn at the Academy. As staff and students return re-invigorated after their summer breaks, eager to establish momentum and realise ambitions, this is always a particularly exciting term at the Academy.

Our mission is always to invite top international musicians to work with our talented students. Our illustrious visitors this Autumn include conductors Edward Gardner, Oliver Knussen, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Sir Mark Elder and Mark Wigglesworth; celebrated composer Magnus Lindberg will be in residence; and we mark the birthday of jazz legend Norma Winstone. As always, we look forward to masterclasses with
numerous distinguished performers — it will be a particular pleasure to welcome back Academy vocal alumni Iestyn Davies and Allan Clayton.

Royal Academy Opera continues on the road with a production of Handel’s Alcina at Hackney’s historic Round Chapel, during ongoing work on our new theatre and recital hall. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has already embraced this truly transformational construction project — and if you would like to add your support, do please look the back cover of this diary for more details of our ‘Inspiring People’ seat campaign.

The eighth year of our Bach Cantatas voyage of discovery nears its conclusion under the guidance of guest director Ton Koopman, recent winner of the Academy Bach Prize supported by the Kohn Foundation. Our many regulars will want to make a note that general booking for the 2017 season opens on Tuesday 4th October.

Finally, we introduce two new strands to our popular themed series of events: Strings at Home provides an opportunity to celebrate our distinguished in-house professors of violin, viola, cello and double bass; and in High 5s, a short-term feature for this term only, we perform works that all come at number five in their composers’ catalogues: fifth symphonies, of course, and more too.

Many more events are listed on our events pages, and as always you can follow us on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat) for further news and behind-the-scenes insights.

We are always thrilled to welcome new friends into our lively community of music-loving supporters, and we hope to see you here soon.

Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, Principal
