In a busy few months, Academy students have won various prestigious prizes both at home and abroad.

In August, tenor Peter Harris won the first prize in the Opera Northern Ireland Festival of Voice. This month, Emma Stannard won the Bampton Classical Opera Young Singers’ Competition with Wagner Moreira as runner-up and Keval Shah picking up the accompanists’ prize. Alim Beisembayev won the 2017 Jacques Samuel Pianos Intercollegiate Competition held at Wigmore Hall and Ariel Lanyi won the Dudley International Piano Competition with a performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 24. Also on piano, following his Wigmore Hall audition, Adam Heron won the Irish Heritage Bursary. Three Academy students won prizes at the Junior Kathleen Ferrier Bursary Competition – Camila Saba Davies, Jordan Carlton and Mihaly Berecz. Rory Ingham was awarded Rising Star in the 2017 British Jazz Awards, with Alexandra Ridout as runner-up. In addition, alumnus Robin Haigh was nominated for British Composer Award for In Feyre Foreste, his work for five recorders in a project organised by the Composition and Historical Performance departments at the Academy.

Further afield, master’s student Matilda Lloyd won first prize at the inaugural Eric Aubier International Trumpet Competition in Rouen, and in Romania, pianist Teodora Oprisor and baritone Michael Rakotoarivony took home both the second prize and audience prize at the Suzana Szörenyi International Duo Competition. Emmanuel Sowicz was awarded First Prize, Audience Award, and Award for Best Chilean at the XLIV International Music Competition ‘Dr. Luis Sigall’ in Viña del Mar earlier this month.

A huge congratulations to all our students on their achievements.
