As a constituent college of the University of London in 1999, the Royal Academy of Music can recognise (in the conferment of the title Professor or Associate Professor of Music) individuals who have made an outstanding contribution both to the Academy and to international musical life.

Professors of Music:

Jo Cole has had a substantial playing career spanning more than 25 years as a distinguished, seasoned orchestral cellist and experienced chamber musician with a record of versatility which includes period performance and innovation in pedagogy. She has been the Academy’s Head of Strings since 2010.

Dr Raymond Holden has been Sir John Barbirolli Reader in Music of the University of London since 2013. A researcher and lecturer specialising in monumental conductors in the 19th and 20th centuries, he has published extensively and lectures at major universities, conservatoires and conferences. He becomes the Academy’s first Professor of Public Engagement.

Dr Timothy Jones is a musicologist, performer and teacher, and is the Academy’s Deputy Principal (Programmes and Research). His main scholarly interests lie in Viennese classical music and the relationships between analysis, interpretation and performance. As a keyboard player, he is particularly interested in the role of improvisation within composed structures.

Oliver Knussen CBE is Richard Rodney Bennett Professor of Music at the Academy and one of the pre-eminent composer-conductors in the world today. He is in residence at the Academy every term to work with student composers and to conduct the Royal Academy of Music Manson Ensemble.

Associate Professor of Music:

Dr David Gorton is Senior Postgraduate Tutor and Associate Head of Research at the Academy. As a composer and researcher he is significant innovator in exploring new instrumental techniques, alternative tuning systems, performer virtuosity, and diverse
models of collaborative practice.

Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, Principal of the Academy, said: ‘I am delighted to announce these latest appointments. I salute these exceptionally versatile musicians, whose achievements reflect the exceptional quality and breadth of engagement at the Academy’.
