First String Experience Director

Welcome to Daniel Smith

Junior Academy’s teaching for beginners, our First Experience courses for Strings and Guitar, have long been important strands of our work. It’s not uncommon for players who started here at the age of only four to progress on to the Primary and Junior Academy programmes right through into their late teenage years. The First String Experience has been running for 29 years now, and has an excellent track record of providing young children with the best possible start. Its emphasis is strongly on the encouragement of core musical skills, physical ease with the instrument and the enjoyment of playing, through group tuition and ensemble playing.

Daniel has extensive experience in training young string players. Many of our students and staff already know him well, as he has worked on the First String Experience for a number of years. Daniel has also worked for Luton, Harrow, Lewisham and Wiltshire Music Services. He currently teaches at Hackney New Primary School, which has music specialist status and he also directs non-auditioned  holiday courses for young string players with Stringwise.

Daniel will succeed long-standing FSE Course Leader Philippa Bunting in the New Year. But we’ll certainly be keeping in touch with Philippa, as she is leaving us to take up a new position as Learning and Qualifications Director at the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
