May 2020

Alexandra Scott (Double Bass, 2004) has been appointed Professor of Double Bass, Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Munich.

Iain Farrington (Piano Accompaniment, 2001) has been commissioned by BBC Proms for a unique First Night arrangement for a Grand Virtual Orchestra to mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth.  

Sarah Tandy (Jazz Piano, 2011) and Rob Luft (Jazz Guitar, 2016) have been nominated for 2020 Parliamentary Jazz Award in the Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year category.

As part of the band 'Bonsai, Rory Ingham (Jazz Trombone, 2019) and Jonny Mansfield (Jazz Vibes, 2018) have been nominated for 2020 Parliamentary Jazz Award in the Jazz Newcomer of the Year category.

Konrad Elias-Trostmann (Violin, 2012) has released a new CD, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Complete Trios, with the Linos Piano Trio.  

David Jonies (Organ, 2004) has been appointed Director of Music and Organist at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago, USA. 

A recording of Ion Marmarinos' The Horses by Horacio López Redondo (Piano Accompaniment, 2013) and Harriet Burns (Singing - soprano, 2014) is featured on a new CD released on RMN records.   

Alex Roth's (Jazz Guitar, 2013) orchestral piece Bone Palace Ballet, written for the London Symphony Orchestra, features on the new CD Panufnik Legacies III released on LSO Live.

April 2020

Peter Noble (Singing - Tenor, 1997) won the 'Best Mystery' Audie award for his audiobook narration of The Chestnut Man by Søren Sveistrup.

Valentina Peleggi (Conducting, 2014) has been appointed Music Director of the Richmond Symphony in Virginia, USA.
Alex Paxton (Composition, 2014) won the Small Ensemble Dankworth Composition Prize.

Robin Davis (Piano Accompaniment, 2008) has been appointed General Music Director at the Pforzheim Theatre, in Baden-Württemberg, starting in September 2020.
Vikki Stone's (Musical Theatre, 2004) new musical #zooilogicalsociety released as online album, due to be staged later in 2020.  

Michael Rakotoarivony (Singing - Baritone/Bass, 2018) has been accepted on the 2020 Salzburger Festspiele Young Singer's Programme and joining the studio of the Vienna State Opera for two years from September 2020.  

Quintin Beer (Choral Conducting, 2019), Victoria Longdon (Choral Conducting, 2016) and Jack Apperley (Choral Conducting, 2018) have reached the finals of the Northern Choir Conducting Competition 2020, postponed to 2021.

March 2020

Midori Komachi (Violin, 2013) has been appointed a Musician in Residence with the British Council and PRS Foundation and will undertake a residency in Brazil in spring 2020, collaborating with a youth orchestra, brass band and local musicians.  

Roshani Abbey (Musical Theatre, 2019) has been cast in the ensemble of Bring It On The Musical tour. 

Des Oliver's (Composition, 2001) new piece The Diasporic Quartets to recieve it's world premiere at LSO in April (postponed).

Samantha Fernando (Composition, 2009) was one of seven composers commissioned by BBC Radio 3 to write a movement of an a cappella work for choir entitled Seven Ages of Woman, broadcast on International Women's Day.  

Kate Oswin (Violin, 2016) has been selected to join the LPO's 1st violin section. 

Ben Hulme (Horn, 2019) has been appointed Principal Horn of the BBC Philharmonic. 

February 2020

Lotte Betts-Dean (Singing – Mezzo, 2016) was awarded the Audrey Strange Memorial Prize for a Singer of Promise at ROSL Annual Music Competition.

Eleanor Corr (Violin, 2017) was overall winner of the Strings Section Prize in the 68th ROSL Annual Music Competition.  

Grace Farrell (Musical Theatre, 2018) has been cast in world premiere of Orfeus: A House Music Opera at the Young Vic.

Fra Fee (Musical Theatre, 2009) has been cast in new Cinderella film to be released in February 2021.

Sarah Gait (Cello, 2019) gave the world premiere of her own piece for solo cello and orchestra with the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester in November, a work newly commissioned for the occasion with an improvised solo cello part. 

Coraline Groen (Violin, 2017) joined second violins of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and won the Netherlands Violin Competition, taking the jury and audience prizes.

Timothy Ridout (Viola, 2016) announced as one of four recipients of a prestigious 2020 £20,000 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship.

Benjamin Wallfisch’s (Composition, 2002) score for the new film Invisible Man, starring Elizabeth Moss, will be released on LP in March.

Alumni appearing in ENO’s Carmen received positive reviews from the Guardian: Conductor Valentina Peleggi (Conducting, 2014) was described as ‘the highlight of this performance’, Nardus Williams (Singing – Soprano, 2017) who made her ENO debut as Micaëla, as ‘one to listen out for’, and Alex Otterburn’s (Singing - Bar/Bass (Opera), 2017) ‘razor-edged Moralès stood out’.

Hannah Bell (Violin, 2019), Luke English (Clarinet, 2019), Sarah Gait (Cello, 2019), Sarah Hoyle (Bassoon, 2019), Bradley Jones (Trumpet, 2019), Katherine Lodge (Trumpet, 2019), Veronica Marziano (Violin, 2019) and George White (Viola, 2013) have been awarded places in the Southbank Sinfonia 2020.

January 2020

Jacob Collier (Jazz Piano, 2018) awarded two Grammys at the 2020 ceremony. He won the Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella category for Moon River and Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals for All Night Long.

Benjamin Grosvenor (Piano, 2012) new album Chopin Piano Concertos, featuring Chopin's Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2, will be released on 21 February 2020 on Decca. Recorded with Elim Chan and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. 

Adam Hickox (Conducting, 2019) selected as one of the Conducting Fellows of the Tanglewood Music Center for 2020. 

Joseph Middleton (Piano Accompaniment, 2005) received a 5 star review in the Guardian for new CD with Louise Alder Lines Written During a Sleepless Night released on Chandos.

Kody Mortimer (Musical Theatre, 2019) making West End debut in Hairspray at the Coliseum.

Rachel Tucker (Musical Theatre, 2003) joining the Broadway cast of Come From Away to reprise the role of Beverly Bass.

Alena Walentin (Flute, 2011) appointed to join the flute faculty at the Koninklijk Conservatorium - Royal Conservatoire to teach Bachelor and Masters students.

December 2019

Fiachra Garvey (Piano, 2013) Artistic Director of Classical Vauxhall, a new concert series taking place in February 2020.

Joseph Havlat (Piano, 2018) Announced as one of St John Smith's Square Young Artists 19/20.

Wenhong Luo (Viola, 2014) Appointed to the teaching faculty of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.

Ian Mitchell (Clarinet, 1970) Album Isn't this a time awarded joint second place in the 'solo artists' category of The American Prize 2019/20.

November 2019

Martynas Levickis (Accordion, 2012) appointed an artist in residence at the Festival of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Katt Newlon (Cello, 2015), Daniel McCallum (Composition, 2012), Lara Somogyi (Harp, 2012) and Flynn Hase Spence (Guitar, 2014) are all members of the musical collective 'The String Theory' which has been nominated for a 2020 Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album, Sekou Andrews and The String Theory.

October 2019

Roshani Abbey (Musical Theatre, 2019) and Kody Mortimer (Musical Theatre, 2019) cast in Gypsy at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester.

Yasmeen Audi (Musical Theatre, 2019), Johan Munir (Musical Theatre, 2017) and Adam Linstead (Musical Theatre, 2004) cast in Broken Wings in Doha.

Cristo Barrios Reyes (Clarinet, 2001) recorded Ayssuragan, a symphonic poem for clarinet and orchestra, by the Spanish composer Gustavo Diaz-Jerez, with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra to be released on Signum Classsics in February 2020.  

Quintin Beer (Choral Conducting, 2019) won the prize for Best Interpretation of a French Baroque Piece in the 9th International Competition for Young Conductors (Europa Cantat) held in Paris and Versailles.

Michaela Bennison (Musical Theatre, 2015) playing lead role in Lady of Jazz at Hope Mill Theatre, Manchester in November 2019.

Harriet Burns (Singing – Soprano, 2014) came second in the Wigmore Hall/Independent Opera International Song Competition.

Kieran Carrel (Singing – Tenor, 2019) joining the Oper Theater Bonn for the 2019-21 seasons and came fourth in the Wigmore Hall/Independent Opera International Song Competition.  

Henry Clay (Oboe, 2016) appointed Principal Cor Anglais of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Oscar Colomina I Bosch (Composition, 2011) appointed Dean of Music at the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, and will take up his post full time in April 2020.  

Emma D'Cruz (Flute, 1988) received a BEM in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to education as Head of Music at West Lodge Preparatory School, Sidcup.

Odaline De La Martinez (Piano, 1976) recipient of the Ivors Academy Gold Badge for 2019.

Tabea Debus (Recorder, 2017) one of four winners of the 2019 Concert Artists Guild (CAG) Victor Elmaleh Competition in New York.

Bernard Gregor-Smith (Cello, 1967) published book A Quintessential Quartet about the Lindsays String Quartet, which was formed at the Academy. 

Luke Holman (Musical Direction and Coaching, 2019) appointed Music Assistant on the upcoming Dear Evan Hansen, which opens at the Noël Coward Theatre in November.

Jack Liebeck (Violin, 2003) is performing the world premiere of a new violin concerto with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Harding and introduced by Professor Brian Cox. A Brief History of Time was written for him by Paul Dean in commemoration of Professor Stephen Hawking.  

Andrew Morris (Organ, 1970) has been awarded an honorary ARSCM by the Royal School of Church Music for his work in church music, choral music and music education.

Michael Pandya (Piano Accompaniment, 2017) won the Pianist's Prize in the Wigmore Hall/Independent Opera International Song Competition and has accepted a place as a Young Artist at the Bayerische Staatsoper Opera Studio for 2019/20.

David Pollock (Harpsichord, 1991) released recording of Gottfried Finger's Violin Sonatas on Chandos which received a five-star review in BBS Music Magazine.

Keval Shah (Piano Accompaniment, 2018) with Theodore Platt, won second prize in the Copenhagen Lied-Duo Competition.

Luka Šulić (Cello, 2012) solo recording of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons released on Sony Classical in October 2019.

Charles Tighe (Musical Theatre, 2003) playing Captain Stewart in the National Theatre's international tour of War Horse.

Naphis Umerkulova (Piano, 2010) new album Darkness Illuminate released on Ulysses Arts, featuring music by Alexander Scriabin and Alexei Stanchinsky.

Richard Upton (Musical Theatre, 2019) cast in Aladdin - the Rock 'n' Roll Panto at the New Wolsey Theatre.  

Chloé Vansoeterstede (Viola, 2014) won third prize in the German Conductors' Award (DDP) and Bärenreiter Award for the best interpretation of a work from the 20th or 21st century.

Nadine Weissmann (Singing – Mezzo-Soprano, 1997) made her Royal Opera House debut as Third Lady in The Magic Flute and can be heard in the legendary McVicar production throughout November.  This past summer she appeared at the Salzburg Festival in Barrie Kosky's Orphée aux enfers.  

September 2019

Bertie Baigent (Conducting, 2018) appointed as a Lies Askonas Fellow with Askonas Holt.

Harriet Burns (Singing – Soprano, 2014) came second in the Wigmore Hall/Independent Opera International Song Competition.

Somi Kim (Piano Accompaniment, 2016), Yoanna Prodanova (Cello, 2019) and Joseph Shiner (Clarinet, 2014) released an album of Brahms chamber music on Orchid Classics in July 2019, which was chosen by Classic FM as an Album of the Week, as well as featured in Gramophone and on Radio 3.

Gary Matthewman (Conducting, 2019) appointed Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of London's Orion Orchestra.

2018 BBC Proms appearances:

This year’s BBC Proms look as exciting as ever, with around 30 alumni, 13 staff and three current students featuring throughout the season.

Academy conductors feature prominently this year and include Robert Ames conducting the London Contemporary Orchestra, Barbirolli Chair of Conducting Sir Mark Elder conducting Stravinsky, Debussy and Wagner with the Hallé, Ilan Volkov and Academy Fellow Andrew Manze, both with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Richard Farnes and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and Edward Gardner, alongside alumnus Neal Davies (baritone/bass-baritone), with the BBC SO. Ludovic Morlot conducts the CBSO and Sir Simon Rattle, alongside alumnus David Shipley (bass), conducts a concert featuring Ravel’s opera L’enfant et les sortilèges. Edward Gardner appears again with the Bergen Philharmonic. Emeritus Professor of Music Jane Glover conducts Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial By Jury, in which the entire cast are Academy alumni: Neal Davies (baritone/bass-baritone), Mary Bevan (soprano), Sam Furness (tenor) and Ross Ramgobin (bass-baritone). Academy Head of Conducting Sian Edwards will lead the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in the second ever ‘Relaxed Prom’. The BSO will be joined by their new disabled-led ensemble, BSO Resound, who will be giving their first major UK performance. The ensemble includes Academy student Siobhan Clough and alumnus Matthew Scott.

Academy composers have work featured this year including a world premiere of a new violin concerto by Philip Venables. The BSO and BSO Resound will be performing the London premiere of two new works by Academy alumnus Alexander Campkin and Roxanna Panufnik’s Songs of Darkness, Dreams of Light is performed by the BBC SO on the Last Night of the Proms.

Soprano Christina Gansch and Academy Fellow and Visiting Professor of Vocal Studies Brindley Sherratt perform Pelléas et Melisande to celebrate the Debussy centenary with Glyndebourne. Miloš Karadaglić (guitar) is the soloist for a new concerto by Joby Talbot and Joseph Middleton (pianist and vocal coach) accompanies Dame Sarah Connolly for her Proms recital debut with music by Vaughan Williams and Howells as well as a world premiere by Benjamin Britten. Colin Currie (professor of percussion) joins forces with contemporary music specialists the JACK Quartet for a programme including world premieres by Simon Holt and Suzanne Farrin, pianist Benjamin Grosvenor is the soloist with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and the BBC SO. Singers Allan Clayton (tenor) and Iestyn Davies (countertenor) make appearances as soloists in Britten’s War Requiem and Handel’s Theodora respectively.
