Sir Mark Elder conductor
Shostakovich Symphony no.5, op.47
Sir Mark Elder, Music Director of the Hallé Orchestra and newly appointed Barbirolli Chair of Conducting at the Academy, returns to conduct Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony. Written and premiered in 1937, at the height of the Great Terror campaign of political repression in the Soviet Union, the first performance is remembered for an impressive half-hour ovation and extraordinary public acclamation. Today, the symphony is a staple of orchestral repertoire, popular for its intense drama and emotional scope.
Tickets £5 (concessions £4) from the Academy’s Box Office from Monday 25th July, telephone 0207873 7300 from Thursday 1st September
