Stockhausen Zodiac for orchestra
Stockhausen Trans for orchestra and tape

Oliver Knussen, the Academy’s Richard Rodney Bennett Professor of Music, conducts an all-Stockhausen programme culminating in Trans (1971), a magnificent and fascinating orchestral work which came to the composer in a dream. As much a piece of theatre as it is music, the entirety of it is played behind a mesh gauze, so that the eerie sounds seem to appear and fade away as if in a dream themselves. This project is the most recent collaboration in a series of side-by-side concerts and mentorship experience for senior Academy students with London Sinfonietta, which began in 2002. This is the third in a biennial series of large-scale Stockhausen performances at Royal Festival Hall.
