Gordon Campbell conductor

Delving into the realms of the great swing bands of the 1930s and 1940s, Academy students explore the music of such legends as Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman, as well as some of the lesser-known material of Glenn Miller, including the classic Everybody Loves My Baby, recorded at London’s Abbey Road Studios during the Second World War.

Other great arrangers being showcased tonight include Sy Oliver, who contributed so many memorable charts to the Dorsey band, and Bill Finegan, sta arranger at the height of the Miller period and later with the bands of Dorsey and Mel Lewis. Other tunes featured are Finegan’s intricate The Continental and Benny Goodman’s classic King Porter Stomp.

Directed by revered trombonist and jazz professor Gordon Campbell, who is internationally renowned for his expertise on the music of this era and Principal Trombone with the BBC Big Band and John Wilson Orchestra.
