Students’ Union welcome

A message from Rachael O'Brien, Students’ Union President 2017-18

Welcome to the Academy!

It might feel a bit intimidating walking through the doors of the building at first, but hopefully you’ll feel the same vibrancy, energy, and excitement I felt when I first arrived, as well as the history and culture that are now almost 200 years old.

Studying at a conservatoire is of course different to studying at university. One week you might be playing in Symphony Orchestra with Semyon Bychkov and learning counterpoint for one of your academic classes, the next might see you performing in a masterclass for a eminent soloist as well as rehearsing with Royal Academy Opera.

From the outset of your studies, you’ll be paired with your Principal Study teacher, a musician at the very top of their field. This student/teacher relationship will become the bedrock of your development at the Academy, and will give you the grounding to start a successful career.

The incredible variety of opportunities provided never ceases to amaze me, and I hope you’ll benefit greatly from everything that is offered to you during your time here. Whilst there is always work to be done, it’s important to let your hair down to, whether at post-concert parties or over a drink at the Academy bar; we all find our own ways to socialise.

Studying in London in an experience unlike any other! I urge you all to make the most of it and I wish you all as rewarding a time as I had here.
