Janet graduated from the University of Leeds with BA (Hons) in Music and an MMus in singing, supported by the EMI Music Sound Foundation and Lawrence Atwell Charity. She was also the recipient of the 1998 Catherine Mills Award for Instrumental performance.
Janet began her career at Opera North whilst still a student and worked in many areas including Artistic Planning, Marketing, Education and Sponsorship. She spent three years as the Programme Co-ordinator whilst writing programme notes for the Royal Opera House Education Department.
Janet's career has included roles such as Assistant Artist Manager at Harrison Parrott where she managed the careers of a list of singers and conductors, Rehearsal Manager at the Sydney Opera House for the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and has been both Artistic Administrator and Company Manager for English Touring Opera. She produced the new musical Enchanted, acted as Company Manager for various small touring opera companies and has been engaged as promoter for the London Opera Players.
Janet now pursues an active freelance career in the arts where roles include: Concert Manager for the Edinburgh International Festival, Tour Manager for the St Petersburg Ballet and Orchestra, Events Manager for the City of London Festival, Duty Manager for LSO St Luke's and Project Manager for spnm. She also captions operas for the benefit of hearing impaired audiences.
Janet's role at the Academy includes assisting all students with the development of their Professional Portfolios and those at postgraduate level taking the Promotional Skills pathway. She is developing a series of Talking Heads and manages a databank of Business Placements where students can get experience working in the music business in a non-performing capacity.
