Minimum Age

Normally 21 by 1st September preceding the start of the programme.

Entrance Standards: Performance level

We would expect a performance standard at least equivalent to that of a recognised music diploma in your Principal-study.

Academic Qualifications

You should normally be completing (or have completed) an undergraduate programme of musical study at the time of application.

Academic Qualifications: Taught Masters degrees

For the MA and MMus, to enrol you must possess a good Honours Bachelor degree (normally in Music: Level 6 in the UK’s National Qualification Framework), otherwise an international qualification of an equivalent standard (for example, 1st Cycle in the Bergen Declaration of the Bologna Process) from a university or educational institution of university rank is required.

A candidate whose qualifications are of lower standard may be admitted if evidence of an adequate academic background and experience in an appropriate field can be shown.

The Academy is pleased to consider a wide variety of international qualifications for entry to its graduate programmes. The following equivalencies are used for students studying under the US/Canadian grade point average (GPA) marking scheme:

First-class Honours: GPA 3.6/4.0
Upper second-class Honours: GPA 3.3/4.0
Lower second-class Honours: GPA 3.0/4.0

Please be aware that, in addition to the required grades, the acceptability of qualifications can be dependent on the type and length of the degree programme studied as well as the institution attended.

Academic qualifications: Research degree

For the MPhil, to enrol you must possess an upper second class honours Bachelor degree and it is preferable also to have a Masters degree.

You may verify the acceptability of your qualifications with the Admissions Officer at admissions@ram.ac.uk. If you require more specific advice, the National Academic Recognition Information Centre for the United Kingdom (UK NARIC) can also assist - call +44 (0)870 990 4088 or e-mail info@naric.org.uk.

Academy qualification: Advanced Diploma (Royal Academy Opera)

Applicants will be judged strictly on merit. Entry to the programme will be dependent on the applicant’s ability to demonstrate at audition and interview that s/he will be able to achieve and sustain the standards required to participate in Royal Academy Opera productions and scenes, and that s/he will be able to synthesise the knowledge, skills and experience demanded of participation in Royal Academy Opera’s artistic and educational projects. Successful applicants will normally have a Master’s qualification or equivalent (in a relevant subject) but the Academy welcomes applications from students who may not meet the normal requirements. For applicants whose first language is not English the normal language requirement is IELTS 7.0/Pearson 70 (Academic Test).

Applicants whose qualifications and/or English language skills do not clearly meet the normal requirements will be given additional interviews following their entrance audition to determine their preparedness for study at this level. These interviews will include an APEL process if this is deemed appropriate. Additional interviews will be conducted by one of the postgraduate tutors and/or an APEL panel consisting of the Head of Programme and Deputy Principal (Programmes and Research).
