The viola is an original design based on the work of Nicolo Amati. The back, of two pieces, is made of medium flamed maple descending from the joint. The sides and scroll are of similar wood. The belly of the instrument is made of fine grained spruce that becomes broader in the flanks. The viola is varnished with oil varnish and is of an orange brown colour. The tuning pegs, tailpiece and chinrest are made of ebony.
