Strauss Tod und Verklärung, op.24 conducted by Christian Thielemann

When Strauss visited the Academy eighty years ago in 1936 he conducted this very same work with the Academy’s orchestra in the Duke’s Hall. The score from that performance, with annotations by Ernest Read, is held in the Academy’s archives.

Total Time: 25:01

Christian Thielemann, Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music and Chief Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden, returns to the Academy to conduct Strauss’s third tone poem, Death and Transfiguration, which was premiered in 1890. The work depicts the death of an artist, who considers his life from childhood innocence to the struggles of manhood and worldly achievements, and finally to the longed-for transfiguration that Heaven brings.

Live concert recording, Saturday 23rd January 2016.
