Jazz Audition
These requirements are for students auditioning to start their studies at the Academy in September 2012. Until specified otherwise, these requirements also apply for auditions in future years. Detailed audition requirements are available here as an Acrobat PDF file. Some audition requirements may change: please check back here regularly. You are welcome to contact the Registry or the department administrator if you have any queries. The closing date for receipt of applications is in our ‘Key Dates’ list.
Candidates are required to demonstrate proficiency in their chosen idiom(s), including instrumental technique, improvisation, sight reading and ability to relate to an accompanying group (provided from current students).
You may be asked to play scales, arpeggios, etc to ABRSM Grade 8 standard. You may also be given sight reading or quick study tests.
“Definite” versions for items a) and b) in Round Two (see the audition requirements PDF, above) can be found in The New Real Book Volume One.
Singers can specify different key requirements to the rhythm section provided at the audition. Singers are not permitted to bring their own accompanist. Singers should either refer to The Real Book to obtain the lyrics when choosing a piece from each list, or transcribe them from a recording.
You will be required to take a 50-minute written paper which comprises harmonisation of a simple melody and a choice of short essay questions of a general musical nature. You will be permitted to use a dictionary. Sorry, we cannot issue specimen papers.
There are specific requirements for written work which must be sent to the Registry to support your application.
