Vocal audition

These requirements are for students auditioning to start their studies at the Academy in September 2018. Until specified otherwise, these requirements also apply for auditions in future years. Some audition requirements may change: please check back here regularly. You are welcome to contact the Registry or the department administrator if you have any queries. Please see www.ram.ac.uk.apply for application information.

In most cases auditions will last from 15 to 20 minutes. As time is limited for some auditions, you may be interrupted before you have performed a complete piece.

Undergraduate Vocal Studies

UCAS Conservatoires course codes:
Bachelor of Music 302F
Gap Year 102F

You should prepare three items in contrasting styles and moods, one of which must demonstrate vocal agility. One item should include a recitative if possible. One item must be sung in a language foreign to you. You may be required to sing only two of the prepared works.

If you are auditioning for the Bachelor of Music or Gap Year programme you will be required to take a 50-minute written assessment including harmonisation of a melody and a short essay question of a general musical nature.  You will be permitted to use a printed dictionary. Sorry, we cannot issue specimen papers.
You may also be asked to take some aural skills tests, consisting of a sight-singing test and some of the following:
- singing the middle notes in a chord
- identification of intervals
- sight reading of rhythms
- sight reading of two simultaneous different rhythms, to be sung and clapped.

Postgraduate Vocal Studies

UCAS Conservatoires course codes:
Master of Arts 1 year 700F or 2 year 702F
Master of Music 1 year 807F or 2 year 805F

Post-Masters Diplomas:
Professional Diploma 903F
Advanced Diploma (Performance) W301
Continuing Professional Development Diploma 908F

The normal study length at Masters level is two years though in exceptional cases one-year study is possible. The Post-Masters Diplomas are one year in length.

If you are interested in MMus or a Post-Masters Diploma you should apply for that initially, as your choice of programme and study length can be discussed further at your audition and adjusted if an offer is made, so you do not need to apply additionally for MA etc and there will be only one audition.

The programme path and length can be discussed at the entrance interview and adjusted as appropriate, you are not tied to the option you choose when you submit your application in UCAS Conservatoires.

For your Postgraduate Vocal Studies audition you should prepare an operatic aria, an oratorio aria and two contrasting works of your own choice from the song repertoire. One item must be sung in English or English translation.

Master of Music (MMus), Professional Diploma (ProfDip) and Advanced Diploma (Performance) candidates:
There are specific requirements for written work to support your application.

Royal Academy Opera

UCAS Conservatoires course code:
Advanced Diploma (Opera) 910F

Please see the Opera Audition page for details. If you apply for Opera, you do not need also to apply for a Vocal Studies course because the Opera panel will automatically also consider you for Professional Diploma or Masters entry and you only have one audition.  Do prepare appropriate written work if you would like to be considered for the MMus or Professional Diploma.
