Your Application
These requirements are for students auditioning to start their studies at the Academy in September 2012. Until specified otherwise, these requirements also apply for auditions in future years. Some audition requirements may change: please check back here regularly. You are welcome to contact the Registry or the department administrator if you have any queries. The closing date for receipt of applications is in our ‘Key Dates’ list.
After the portfolios (see below) have been assessed, you will be informed around the beginning of November whether the department has selected you for interview. The interviews will take place during the main audition period in London (December 2011), and you should attend at the allocated time.
You must send several examples of original work, including at least one large-scale orchestral/ensemble piece. Please supply recordings wherever possible. The deadline for the Registry to receive your portfolio is 1st October 2011 – we advise that you use special delivery to ensure your portfolio arrives.
You will be required to take a 50-minute written paper which comprises harmonisation of a simple melody and a choice of short essay questions of a general musical nature. You will be permitted to use a dictionary. Sorry, we cannot issue specimen papers.
Musicianship and keyboard skills tests may also be required. These normally are a set of tests of increasing difficulty. Sorry, but we cannot issue specimen papers. Please also bring a short piano piece to demonstrate your level of keyboard skills.
You must send at least three pieces, including an orchestral work and another including solo voice(s) and/or chorus. Please supply recordings wherever possible.
Your portfolio must also include two examples of your academic written work (in English); each example should be between 1000 and 2000 words long. Your written work should aim to demonstrate:
• Responsiveness to music and musical issues
• Quality of critical engagement
• Capacity for research enquiry
The deadline for the Registry to receive your portfolio is 1st October 2011 – we advise that you use special delivery to ensure your portfolio arrives.
