Additional needs
The Academy’s Disability Handbook is a practical working document and a reference for anyone who is interested in disability issues at the Royal Academy of Music. It is intended as a guide to the support available for students and staff with disabilities and members of the public visiting the Academy.
For more details please see our Guide for students with disabilities (May 2010, PDF format)
This website has been carefully designed so that it is fully accessible to disabled users. If you have any problems using the site, please contact webmaster@ram.ac.uk.
For support in your application to study at the Academy, see our ‘Before you Apply’ section.
The Academy offers a wide range of support for students who have specific learning difficulties and disabilities, including exam arrangements and specialist tuition.
Disability Advisor
The Academy has a Disability Advisor, whose job it is to oversee the implementation of the Disability Equality Policy and Action Plan (a summary Disability Equality Policy Statement is also available). To contact the Disability Advisor please call 020 7873 7431 or email disability@ram.ac.uk.
This is a confidential service for students and staff. Services include:
Programme Tutors
The Programme Tutors are available to discuss any matters with students arising from their time at the Academy. The Tutors are usually the first port of call. There are two Undergraduate and four Postgraduate Academic Tutors.
Dyslexia/Dyspraxia Tutor
For those with specific learning difficulties we offer in-house tuition with Paula Bishop, who is a qualified dyslexia teacher and a specialist in music and dyslexia. This service is available to students who have been allocated funding for specialist tuition through their DSA. The Academy may also be able to assist with the funding of tuition for International students. This should be discussed with the Disability Advisor.
Student and International Liaison Sub-Committee (SILC)
SILC provides an opportunity for any student at the Academy to raise an issue with the Academy authorities via a number of elected representatives. The Academy considers that students’ views about the institution and about their programme of study is vital to the overall success of the Academy. The Welfare and Disability Working Group reports to SILC.
University of London Union (ULU)
The Academy’s Students’ Union is affiliated to ULU and so its members have access to all ULU service provision. ULU has a Students with Disabilities Officer who is responsible for providing support and information for disabled students and working with other groups to provide a fairer student environment. Email the ULU Students Disabilities Officer: disability@ulu.lon.ac.uk
