The Academy occupies a striking, purpose-built Edwardian building dating from 1911, joined to the converted Nash-designed terrace of 1-5 York Gate by the new David Josefowitz Recital Hall. It includes all the requirements of a modern conservatoire, including several top-quality performance venues.

In Autumn 2009 the Academy officially opened a new performance centre, which was built over the summer into the empty space right in the middle of the Academy's site which has fondly been known as 'the void'. The new centre further enhances facilities with a total of 11 practice studios, all fully sound-proofed and equipped with brand-new pianos. The top floor provides a new studio for Royal Academy Opera, the Academy's specialist postgraduate course under the artistic direction of Jane Glover.
After a busy few months of building work over summer 2009, the entrance foyer has been radically remodelled for improved circulation during busy periods and direct access to the Box Office. Most noticeably, a beautiful mosaic floor has been installed to match as closely as possible the floor which originally graced when the building when it was opened in 1911.
