Taking Centre Stage

Raising the Curtain in Marylebone: A New Theatre

Look forward to world-class performances from 2018 in our dazzling new theatre and recital hall

The Academy’s talented students deserve the very best facilities, so our world-renowned teachers can most effectively foster their outstanding musical prowess and individual creativity.

We are currently transforming the Academy’s theatre into an outstanding and versatile venue for cutting-edge performance and recording. Above the theatre, we’re building a brand new 100-seat recital hall.

Watch the architect, Ian Ritchie, introduce his ambitious plans:

Information for our neighbours

Every effort is being made to minimise disruption to our neighbours. However, as with all major construction projects, some noise and occasional temporary road closures are necessary. We provide dates and information in advance of all significant activity – please check this page for regular updates throughout the project.

Key contact for residents’ enquiries: Mike Trigg, Senior Project Manager, telephone 07875 177623.

Traffic management

In compliance with the requirements from Crown Estate Paving Commission (CEPC) – who control the infrastructure north of the Academy – our contractors Osborne have developed a Traffic Management Plan that causes the least disruption to the residents and business dealings of York Gate, York Terrace East and the junction of MacFarren Place.

This has necessitated a road closure of the CEPC controlled section of MacFarren Place at the junction with York Terrace East. This will be in operation for the duration of the project to facilitate deliveries of site materials. This section of road is closed using timber hoarding, with a set of double gates that are ‘locked’ in the open position between 17:00 and 08:00 Monday to Friday and all day weekends and bank holiday. The road is re-opened at the end of each working day and is fully opened at weekends and Bank Holidays.

It is anticipated that all deliveries will enter MacFarren Place off Marylebone Road and be guided into place by a dedicated traffic banks-man.

More about the project

The Academy is transforming the cramped and outdated theatre and replace it with superb new facilities, designed by the celebrated architect Ian Ritchie. He has brilliantly reimagined the existing space: reshaping the auditorium, creating a new balcony, improving sight lines and increasing the overall seating capacity by 40%. The design delivers state-of-the-art stage and recording facilities in an adaptable theatre suitable for all forms of classical and contemporary opera and musical theatre productions.

The new theatre complex also provides a 100-seat roof-top recital hall, significant improvements to back and front of house facilities and full accessibility.
