Junior Academy double bassist Jude Chandler has become the youngest musician to be made an Honorary Fellow of the Guild of Musicians and Singers (GMS), at the age of 14. He joins Academy alumni including Sir Mark Elder, Dame Evelyn Glennie and Benjamin Grosvenor, in an organisation that was founded in 1993 to promote a high standard of musical performance.

Chandler began the double bass in 2009 with Cathy Elliott, aged 6, and attended Primary Academy from 2012. He joined Junior Academy in 2015, and in 2016 won its Norma Simpson Lower Strings Prize. At Junior Academy he plays chamber music and is a member of the Junior Academy Classical Orchestra and Sinfonia.

In 2011 he won a Leverhulme Scholarship to play with National Children’s Orchestra and since 2013 he has been a member of the National Youth String Orchestra (Intermediate). In 2016 he was highly commended in the Silk Street Sinfonia Young Soloist Competition, which led to a concerto performance with the group in May, and the offer of the Honorary Fellowship. He will perform for the GMS alongside Junior Academy musicians on 13 October 2018.
