Hard Times

Daniel Bowling - Posted on 18.10.2017

The Royal Academy Musical Theatre Company 2017-18 were put straight to work as soon as term began, workshopping a new musical Hard Times. The piece is based on the novel by Charles Dickens with book by John Caird, director of Les Misérables. The show was composed by John Cameron, (Les Misérables), with lyrics by translator and poet Ranjit Bolt OBE.

The students were directed by John Caird, with Musical Direction by Alfonso Casado Trigo (Les Misérables, Miss Saigon), which culminated in two performances on 29th September 2017. The staged reading was double cast, giving all students an opportunity to showcase their talent in a wide variety of roles. They performed at St Mary Magdalene Church to an invited audience of industry professionals including Trevor Nunn CBE, and representatives from Cameron Mackintosh Ltd and Disney Theatrical Group.

Set in the fictional northern industrial city of Coketown, Hard Times is Dickens’s most hard-hitting political novel - a tragi-comic masterpiece that explores his favourite themes of social inequality, hypocrisy and greed. The students took on the challenge of performing this brand new work within the first three weeks of their course and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with such an established and talented artistic team.
